ity-owned bus operator PT Transjakarta will provide services on three new routes around the newly opened Tanah Abang Skybridge in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta.
“One of the reasons for constructing the multifunction bridge is to integrate modes of transportation at Tanah Abang Station […], where street vendors and ojek (motorcycle taxi) commonly flock the area in front of the station,” city-owned market operator PD Pembangunan Sarana Jaya president director Yoory C. Pinontoan said in a written statement on Friday.
The three new routes are Transjakarta line 5F connecting Kampung Melayu and Tanah Abang, 8C between Iskandar Muda and Tanah Abang and 1H between Tanah Abang and Gondangdia, which will complement the Tanah Abang Explorer bus service that has been in operation since last year connecting different blocks of the Tanah Abang Market.
To support the operation, Yoory said, three bus stops would be available in the area, two of which had already been built.
There were mixed reactions among pedestrians and sellers to the new footbridge, which was opened on Friday.
“[The skybridge means pedestrians and vendors] will not disturb [traffic on Jl. Jatibaru] anymore. Back then, the road was crowded [with pedestrians and vendors],” said Sulaiman, 60, a pedestrian who tried it out the first time.
On the other hand, Nirmala Dewi, 27, said she would now have to walk further just to get to the train station.
Some people who insisted on accessing the turnstile gate that connects the bridge with the station were stopped by train station officials, as the gate was still under construction, The Jakarta Post observed. (sau/mai)
