T Transportasi Jakarta (TransJakarta) has announced that it will operate more electric bus units by the end of this year in an effort to accelerate the company’s energy transition.

TransJakarta director Welfizon Yuza said on Thursday that 26 electric buses are awaiting permits and expected to be in full operation by the end of 2023.  These buses will fulfill the company’s goal of having 100 electric buses in operation.

“There will be an addition of 26 electric buses. These are the ones we plan to have operational by the end of the year. The buses are already in Indonesia and are currently in the process of obtaining licenses,” said Welfizon during the launching of the buses, as quoted by Antara.

Currently, TransJakarta operates 74 electric buses, including the recently added 22 through a partnership with PT Bianglala Metropolitanto, which operate on two integration routes, Manggarai Station to the University of Indonesia (4B) and TU Gas to Bundaran Senayan (4C).

The 22 new electric buses have low floors, making them more accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities.

Yuza said the launch of these buses shows the company’s commitment to a sustainable framework called Bestari, or Bersih, Berdaya dan Lestari (clean, empowered and sustainable).

“It is good for the environment, empowering from an economic perspective, and sustainable from a social aspect. The launch of the 22 electric bus units today is one of the manifestations of that framework,” said Welfizon.

TransJakarta aims to have 50 percent of its fleet comprised of electric buses by 2027. By 2030, the aim is for the entire TransJakarta ecosystem to use electric buses.

Jakarta Transportation Agency head Syafrin Liputo emphasized that the operation of electric buses by TransJakarta aligned with the road map for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Jakarta. This is outlined in the Jakarta Gubernatorial Regulation No. 90/2021 regarding the regional low carbon and climate resilient development plan.

The plan also aligns with Jakarta Gubernatorial Decree No. 1053/2022, which aims to expedite battery-based electric vehicle operation in TransJakarta’s service.

“We are already within the right road map; it is now about encouraging other operators to contribute, of course, while considering the correct business processes, ensuring how an electric bus service can be sustained in the long term,” said Syafrin.
