even rivers in Jakarta and two in its satellite cities of Tangerang, Banten, and Bekasi, West Java, are dumping 21 tons of trash into the Jakarta Bay daily, a researcher has found.
The seven rivers are the Angke, Sentiong, Sunter, Cilincing and Marunda, while the two in the satellite cities are the Dadap in Tangerang and Bekasi in Bekasi.
“The rivers spew a total of 21 tons of waste into Jakarta Bay daily,” said Reza Cordova, a sea chemical and ecotoxicology researcher from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences’ oceanographic research center.
Reza added that most of the trash that flowed into the bay came from Jakarta’s satellite cities because the trash management of Jakarta’s rivers was well-managed.
“Waste in Jakarta is relatively less severe than those of Tangerang and Bekasi because waste management in Jakarta is the best [compared to Greater Jakarta],” he said as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com on Monday.
The trash that ends up in the bay consists mostly of wood, glass and plastic.
