Police have arrested a suspected motorcycle thief in South Tangerang who would reportedly look out for the next vehicle to steal while selling friend rice on the streets.

hile selling fried rice on the streets near housing complexes of South Tangerang, Banten, Arohmanul Bais, was allegedly looking out for the next motorbike to steal.

After reportedly making off with five motorbikes so far with the help of a friend named Dendy, the 26-year-old’s alleged criminal scheme was uncovered by police on a recent Saturday night.

South Tangerang Police arrested Bais in Kedaung village, Pamulang subdistrict, South Tangerang, on Dec. 29 at around 11 p.m., in response to residents calling out the alleged criminal.

“While pushing the fried rice cart, the suspect would look out for motorbikes left by their owners and [later come back to pick the lock and take the motorcycles],” South Tangerang Police criminal investigation unit head Adj. Comr. Alexander Yurikho said in a written statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

Alexander said the police had caught Bais after shooting him in the leg, while Dendy had managed to escape.

Bais reportedly admitted to stealing five motorbikes so far with the help of Dendy.

The police confiscated a fried rice cart and three motorbikes at the rented room of another person, identified only as AB, in Kedaung.

Bais would be charged under Article 363 of the Criminal Law on theft, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.
