he Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported that a 6.7-magnitude earthquake jolted East Nusa Tenggara’s West Sumba on Tuesday at 1:59 p.m. local time, after experiencing at least three smaller earthquakes a few hours earlier.
The first was a 6-magnitude earthquake at 6:59 a.m. on Tuesday morning, followed by two aftershocks of 5.2 magnitude and 3.2 magnitude about an hour later.
The 6.7-magnitude earthquake’s epicenter was located at sea, 120 kilometers southwest of Waikabubak in West Sumba, at a depth of 10 km.
The BMKG has reported the 6.0-magnitude earthquake stroke at 6:59 a.m. The earthquake’s epicenter was located at sea, 92 km southwest of Waikabubak in West Sumba regency, East Nusa Tenggara, at a depth of 47 km.
The earthquake was felt strongly in Tambolaka, Waingapu, Sumbawa and Bima.
“The earthquake was caused by a thrust fault […]. There is no potential for a tsunami, ” the BMKG’s Earthquake and Tsunami Center head, Rahmat Triyono, said in a press statement.
“As of yet, we haven’t received any reports of damages caused by the earthquake,” Rahmat added.
