angerang Regency secretary Moch. Maesal Rasyid defended the construction of a bridge connecting Dadap subdistrict in Kosambi, Tangerang, Banten, and artificial islet C, one of the reclaimed islets off Jakarta’s coast.

“[The construction is] for economic and infrastructure growth,” Maesal said on Tuesday as reported by tempo.co.

He added that the northern part of Tangerang, which lags behind other areas in the regency, would grow rapidly once the bridge is complete.

“The bridge can serve as an alternative route from Tangerang to Jakarta and vice versa,” he said.

The Tangerang regency and Banten administrations have already issued a construction permit for the 1.4-kilometer bridge connecting Dadap and islet C.

According to Budi Mulyanto, Bina Marga and Water Resources Agency head for Tangerang regency, said the structure would also connect Tangerang and Banten.

“There would be more roads connected [to the bridge],” Slamet said, adding that its construction was also in line with a plan to build 20-km-long roads on the north coast of Tangerang and another 40-km road connected to Banten.

“We have known about the road construction plan and have included it in the regency's spatial planning,” Slamet said.

In July last year, local residents protested the bridge’s construction as the Jakarta administration suspended development projects on islets C and D. (swd)
