fire in a store room at The Media Hotel and Towers in Jl. Gunung Sahari, Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, on Thursday evening claimed one life, an official has said.
The victim has been identified as Dian, 35, a security officer working at the hotel, Central Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency head Hardisiswan said. Dian died from respiratory problems.
“When the incident occurred, the security officer was not aware of it until heavy smoke filled the basement of the hotel,” he said on Friday as reported by tribunnews.com.
Hardisiswa said the fire broke at around 9:20 p.m. according to information from the hotel management. There is no information as to what exactly started the fire, but the agency believes that it was caused by an electrical short circuit.
"We suspect it was caused by an electricity short in the security room. [The fire] spread and emerged in the hotel warehouse, which was filled with piles of books and papers," he said, kompas.com reported.
The agency deployed 19 fire trucks and 95 personnel to put out the fire.
Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control at around 11.10 p.m.
The fire caused property damage worth Rp 200 million (US$13,793). (sau)
