drunk policeman allegedly shot dead a resident named Yohanes Octo Moiwend in Wogekel village, Merauke regency, Papua on Tuesday, the sixth man to be shot by security forces in the province in less than a month.

According to accounts from local Catholic priest Anselmus Amo and the Association of Human Rights Lawyers for Papua (PAHAM Papua), Yohannes went to a cafe with two friends in the early hours of Tuesday, where he got into a confrontation with a police officer, identified only as Brig. RK. Both Yohannes and RK were drunk.

RK hit Yohannes a few times with the butt of his pistol while Yohannes’ friends tried to stop him. Suddenly, two of the cafe owner’s sons arrived and started hitting Yohannes as well.

Two gunshots rang out from amid the group of people and Yohannes fell to the ground, dead. He was found with gunshot wounds behind his ear.
