ndosat Ooredoo, Indonesia’s leading digital telecoms company, has launched the first commercial 5G service in Solo, Central Java. The 5G service will offer Indosat Ooredoo’s customers and enterprise clients access to a faster cellular broadband internet with the hopes of bringing a digital transformation and economic recovery to the city.

The launch is part of Indosat Ooredoo’s new partnership with the Surakarta administration to support the city’s economic recovery, along with other collaborations in MSME empowerment, digital talent education and smart city development. The partnership was announced at an event attended by Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Qatari Ambassador to Indonesia Fawziya Edrees Salman Al-Sulaiti and Huawei Indonesia CEO Jacky Chen.

During the event, Indosat Ooredoo president director and CEO Ahmad Al-Neama said he was thankful and proud to be able to launch Indosat Ooredoo’s first commercial 5G service in Solo to be able to show the transformative power of 5G to the city’s youth, digital community and businesses.

”We believe this technology will help accelerate the digital transformation of Indonesian people and encourage business innovations in every industry. This day marks the start of our journey in championing the 5G revolution across the country, advancing the nation to a 5G-ready future,” he said.

“Through the 5G service, we would like to nurture the spirit of #BangkitBersama5G (RiseWith5G) in Solo and #HighFiveUntukIndonesia (HighFiveForIndonesia) across Indonesia, materializing Indosat Ooredoo’s mission to encourage a better society through the power of technology. We would also like to thank the Indonesian government for their sustained trust and support for our company.”

Communications and Information Minister Johnny G. Plate congratulated Indosat Ooredoo for its milestone, saying he believed 5G would increase productivity and the growth of the national economy.

“Even though 4G is still the backbone of Indonesia’s digital transformation, we hope the early phase of 5G commercialization can contribute to the national vision of becoming a digital powerhouse in the region. Together, let us ensure that the presence of this 5G service can bring a host of benefits for our nation and have a significant impact on our economic recovery,” he said.

Huawei Indonesia CEO Jacky Chen said 5G technology was founded alongside efforts to fulfill the needs of consumers and pursue technological innovations.

“We believe that both “wheels” will continue to roll toward a future of infinite possibilities, from unlimited connectivity, Smart City development, digital transformation, to acceleration of the digital economy growth. Technology will continue to create added value and encourage innovation. We are happy to become part of history, together with our trusted partners Indosat Ooredoo and the people of Solo, to build a smarter and more connected Indonesia,” he said.

Indosat Ooredoo’s partnership with the Surakarta administration aims to encourage a collaborative response in accelerating the economic recovery through empowering MSMEs and providing youths with the chance to sharpen their potential.

In bringing 5G service to Solo, Indosat Ooredoo focuses the 5G experience in three use cases: increased cellular broadband for better wireless video quality, video games and other data intensive cellular apps; continuing Solo’s Smart City and Industry 4.0 vision through the application of machine learning and operation automation; as well as smart edutainment combining augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

To empower Solo’s MSMEs, Indosat Ooredoo has started selling Rasa Solo hampers through the myIM3 app, and will train 10,000 MSMEs in Solo to digitize their businesses. The company also offers the UCan service to facilitate micro loans for MSMEs to fund their business growth.

For digital talent education, Indosat Ooredoo will facilitate the training and coaching of 2,000 youths and communities in Solo, along with AR training for 500 young developers in Solo.

To turn Solo into the next smart city, the company will build a smart information center in Solo City Hall that will connect the city’s command center with more than 2,700 RT to provide citywide real-time information.

After the early phase of 5G rollout in Solo, Indosat Ooredoo plans to expand commercial 5G service to other major cities in Indonesia, including Jakarta, Surabaya and Makassar, where there is a high consumer demand for data service.
