ith two Southeast Asian nations currently serving on the United Nations’ most powerful body, ASEAN Secretary General Lim Jock Hoi briefed for the first time members of the Security Council on Thursday to highlight the organization’s role in maintaining regional peace and security.
ASEAN has contributed to the peace, security and prosperity in Southeast Asia region, Lim said, underlining the importance of its relations with external partners, including the UN.
Thursday’s meeting at the UN headquarters in New York was hosted at the end of Vietnam’s presidency of the Security Council in January, and early in the nation’s 2020 chairmanship of the regional grouping. Indonesia is also a nonpermanent member of the council, having started its last term in a two-year stint at the beginning of the year.
“Indeed, it is often said that with their knowledge and familiarity of their respective region’s nuances, regional organizations are in a good position to complement the work of the United Nations,” Lim said at the briefing, according to a readout of his statement from the UN website.
