s an Indonesian technology company with the leading marketplace platform, Tokopedia understands the importance of sharing its experience and know-how to help the nation — especially budding tech talents — grow through the power of technology.
START Summit is an annual technology conference aimed at doing just that. This year’s edition was held on Saturday with the theme Driving Innovation at Scale, bringing together Tokopedia’s top executives and valuable staff members as speakers.
“Through this conference, Tokopedia shares its stories and experiences in driving scalable innovation that responds to the many challenges of our time, especially the pandemic,” said Tokopedia Co-Founder and Vice Chairman Leontinus Alpha Edison.
“Tokopedia’s innovations have been enabled by collaborations with our strategic partners, one of them being digital talents. We believe that creating the best products and services, ones that make people’s lives easier, requires the best talents. That is why Tokopedia focuses on developing digital talents through different methods, one of which is START Summit."
The yearly conference hopes to boost both the quantity and quality of Indonesia’s digital talents through education, elevating the country’s technology industry in an effort to improve its global competitiveness. This effort further aligns with the government’s commitment to fulfilling the needs of 9 million digital talents and, thereby, reaching its goal of being home to 113 million digital talents by the year 2030.
The summit focused on breakthroughs and innovations in six different fields; Core Engineering, Data, Infrastructure and Engineering Productivity, Front-End, Security /Data Protection, and Privacy office/Risk. Opening this year’s event were Minister of State Secretary of Indonesia Pratikno, Minister of Communication and Information Technology of Indonesia Johnny G. Plate and Leontinus.
Additionally, Tokopedia Engineering Head Kevin Christopher introduced Dekara Solutions, a technology company that aims to democratize technology in Indonesia and the region surrounding it. The new company recently launched Dekara API Monitoring for developers to help monitor application programming interface (API) performance, according to its page on Tokopedia Academy.
“Through Tokopedia Academy, and in this case START Summit, all tech enthusiasts in Indonesia have the opportunity to learn, collaborate and receive relevant tech-related [education] directly from experts in their fields,” said Tika Widiati, Tokopedia Software Engineer Lead.
Tika was also one of the speakers, leading a discussion on API monitoring in the infrastructure and engineering productivity segment.
As further explained by Tokopedia Engineering Manager M. Ilham Jamaludin, participants got the opportunity to learn from the practical experiences of Nakama (Tokopedia employees), as well as discuss the newest innovations while networking with fellow tech enthusiasts and experts.
START Summit is presented by Tokopedia Academy as one of the company’s efforts to realize the equal distribution of knowledge through tech. It follows other forward-thinking initiatives such as START Women in Tech, a conference that empowers women in technology; START CX First Summit, a platform focusing on user experience; and Tokopedia Goes to Campus, an artificial intelligence (AI) center in partnership with universities.
Tokopedia Academy has a close, long-standing partnership with the Communications and Information Ministry through SIBERKREASI to host Tokopedia NextGen.
Other notable Tokopedia initiatives are the Accredited Internship program and Hackathon DevCamp in partnership with Kampus Merdeka by the Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry.
