he Jakarta Customs and Excise Directorate General has sealed a luxury jewelry store in North Jakarta, over suspected customs and tax violations, days after taking similar action against outlets of the United States luxury jeweler Tiffany & Co.
The authority on Friday said it had sealed Bening Luxury’s store in Pluit, in a joint operation with the North Jakarta’s Taxation Directorate General (DJP) office, citing alleged failures to meet import duty and tax obligations.
Officials suspect the store may not have fully complied with customs and tax collection procedures, including value-added tax and income tax, said Nugroho Arief Darmawan, head of intelligence at the Jakarta Customs and Excise office, according to a release issued on Sunday.
“We are conducting an administrative examination because there are indications that import duty or tax payments may not have been properly fulfilled,” Nugroho said.

He added that the sealing had been a temporary administrative measure to secure the premises and facilitate further checks on customs and tax compliance.
Authorities declined to disclose preliminary findings, saying inspections were ongoing and results would be announced after further review at the tax and customs offices.
