T

he Jakarta Customs and Excise Directorate General has shut down three outlets operated by United States luxury jeweler Tiffany & Co over allegations of illegal imports.

The authority conducted operations on Wednesday targeting high-value goods suspected of containing items that were not declared in the import notification, resulting in the sealing of the jeweler’s outlets across three Jakarta shopping malls, including Plaza Senayan, Plaza Indonesia and Pacific Place.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa confirmed the shutdown on Thursday, stressing that “any company conducting illegal imports will definitely be shut down and sealed”.

He urged business players to comply with the prevailing regulations, as the government would not tolerate illegal products that potentially harm domestic industries.

Purbaya said the possibility of similar shutdowns at other outlets would depend on “findings on the ground”, adding that businesses would be issued a warning before any closure.

“[Businesses] are usually given a warning first, and if they fail to comply, then they will be sealed,” he said on Thursday, as quoted by Tirto.id.
