Government agency lauds homegrown superapp Gojek’s disaster relief efforts

Homegrown superapp Gojek stepped up to help flood victims get back on their feet, from assisting with the evacuation of  victims, distributing more than 40,000 basic needs packages, to initiating an online fundraising campaign together with Kitabisa and Amil Zakat National Agency (Baznas). These efforts have reached 10,000 residents impacted by the flood across 84 locations in Jakarta.

GoPay CEO Aldi Haryopratomo, who represented Gojek Group management and joined the volunteer team on Sunday, Jan. 5, said, "We will continue to provide assistance to those affected by the flood through fundraising, logistical assistance, as well as manpower support. Hopefully, the condition will improve soon.

Gojek aims to raise funds of Rp 1 billion to aid the victims. As of Jan. 13, 2020, Gojek has raised over Rp 730 million and will continue to raise funds until Jan. 31. Seeing people’s enthusiasm in helping flood victims in need the past week, Gojek is optimistic that it will reach its fundraising target.

Gojek was also the first on-demand tech company in Indonesia to distribute school uniforms and hygiene kits to flood victims, in collaboration with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, as well as the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).

Atika Nur Rahmania, Head of the Jakarta Provincial Communication, Information and Statistics Agency said, "Gojek is the first on-demand company to provide school uniforms and hygiene kits to schools affected by major floods last week. In collaboration with DKI Jakarta provincial administration, we appreciate Gojek's rapid response in providing assistance to schools in need so that students can quickly return to their daily learning activities."

The year 2020 had just begun when one of the most catastrophic flood disasters fell upon Greater Jakarta. According to the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), at its peak 173,050 people were evacuated following the heavy flooding on Jan. 1. The rainfall intensity of 377 millimeters per day on New Year’s Day caused unprecedented damage to the city, including in areas that had never been affected by floods previously.
