Andre Soelistyo to focus on payments and financial services businesses; Kevin Aluwi to lead Gojek businesses

Gojek Group announced a management reorganization on Wednesday as part of a drive to supercharge growth and business sustainability while ensuring operational clarity throughout the organization. The reorganization comes after the announcement that Gojek-branded services are now all generating positive margins, with Gojek Group’s Gross Transaction Value (GTV) exceeding US$12 billion and GTV in payments-related businesses now exceeding prepandemic levels as more consumers and merchants turn to digital services.

Under the new arrangement,  Gojek Group co-CEO Andre Soelistyo will focus on Gojek’s payments and financial services businesses, including payments, financial services and business solutions, while his counterpart, Kevin Aluwi, will run all Gojek services including transport, food, logistics and the company’s third-party platform. These changes are operational only and do not affect the group’s structure.

A joint statement released by the Co-CEOs read:

“As we steer the company through what has been an unbelievably transformative period for Gojek and the world at large, the time feels right to take another look at our business to make sure it is optimized for future success.

“We’ve achieved great things over the past year, including making Gojek products margin positive, seeing Group GTV soar past $12 billion and seeing our payments-related businesses exceed prepandemic performance. If we are to continue on this trajectory, we must make sure we are structured for what lies ahead.

“What has become clear is that the two elements of our company – Gojek operations and payments and financial services – have become increasingly distinct, with each requiring different expertise and focus, and we should arrange our teams to optimize for this.

“We will continue in our roles as Gojek Group co-CEOs, but each of us will have a clearer scope of responsibility. This will enable our business to be more focused and agile in developing products, while at the same time increasing the speed of execution. We will of course continue to operate for the benefit of everyone in our ecosystem as we look to ensure that the Group can continue to improve lives and reduce friction for society for many years to come.”

Under the new structure, the payments group will be divided into three units – payments, business solutions and financial services – all of which will report to Andre. After almost 3 years as Gojek COO, Hans Patuwo, a former McKinsey partner, will move to head up the payments division. Ryu Suliawan, Gojek Head of Merchants who is also the founder of Midtrans, a payment gateway acquired by Gojek in 2017, will head up business solutions in addition to his existing role.

After three years as GoPay CEO, Aldi Haryopratomo will stand down from his role effective Jan. 1, 2021. Aldi has overseen the exponential growth of the GoPay business, leading it from an e-wallet designed specifically for the Gojek ecosystem, to becoming one of the leading digital payment providers in Indonesia.

Gojek Group Co-CEO Andre said, “After giving it his all for three years and building the payments business to where it is today, Aldi will step down as GoPay CEO as this new structure takes effect. Our payments business has grown exponentially over the time he has been at the helm, becoming a key part of how people throughout Indonesia transact. We will always owe him a debt of gratitude.

“He has achieved many things while working with us, from playing a pivotal role in our recent fundraising successes, to building a solid team and organization that the company can be truly proud of. He will continue to act as the friend and trusted adviser that everyone at the company knows, trusts and respects.”

GoPay CEO Aldi said, “When I took over, GoPay was still a baby. Today, millions of users and hundreds of thousands of merchants depend on our company for their financial needs.

I am grateful to have shared this chapter of my life with GoPay and the many people who have helped build the company into what it is today. I will look back with pride on what we have all achieved together and have no doubt that the company will continue to give opportunities for income and financial access to those who need it the most.”
