The pandemic has accelerated the adoption of digital payment methods around the world, including Indonesia. Many people can attest to how e-wallet services have helped them adapt smoothly to various changes brought about by the pandemic, from conducting online shopping and deliveries to maintaining cashless or contactless transactions.

In a survey conducted by Sharing Vision in December 2020, GoPay was declared the most widely used digital payment service in Indonesia. The e-wallet service provided by super app Gojek ranked first as the most widely used e-money, chosen by 81 percent of respondents.

GoPay’s leadership comes as no surprise as the platform consistently provides solutions and supports its partners and business associates to move forward amid a challenging time. Aside from making online transactions easier, GoPay has developed several initiatives throughout 2020 including its support for local micro, small and medium enterprises’ (MSMEs) digital transformation, eliminating online transaction fees for merchants through its Zero MDR program, enhancing security features and education as well as digital donations to help others in need.

“About 86 percent of our respondents said they mostly used e-money platforms to pay for their food delivery services. At the same time, around 77 percent of our respondents said that they used e-money to pay for online transportation services,” Sharing Vision Telematics Research Institute chief Dimitri Mahayana said.

Additionally, GoPay also ranked first in services used in QR-code payments due to its ever-expanding network and technological developments. As physical transactions have become limited, the presence of QRIS to facilitate digital transactions is believed to be increasingly helpful for entrepreneurs.

Furthermore, Indonesia ICT Institute executive director Heru Sutadi said that being a pioneer in the digital payment industry in Indonesia had given GoPay added advantages in its adoption among consumers.

“As a pioneer, GoPay had a strong user base from the Gojek ecosystem before other industry players. So, it is natural for GoPay to offer superior services,” he said.

According to Heru, the growing maturity of the Gojek ecosystem has turned GoPay not only into a useful platform to pay for online transportation services, which is a Gojek core service, but also to pay for a far wider range of services.

He continued that the digital payment industry would continue to be competitive in the future.

“The use of electronic payments outside the online transportation business and its derivatives has been key [to GoPay’s success]. Those who can diversify services quickly to stay relevant will lead the competition,” he said.

Moving forward, GoPay will focus on developing its business inside and outside the Gojek ecosystem. This will be one of GoPay's business priorities in 2021 and will support the company's efforts to achieve sustainable business growth.

Its services range from digital payments to financial products and services whose development will be tailored to the needs of consumers. This is developed by prioritizing four fundamental pillars, namely security, comfort, customer service and corporate social mission.

Currently, GoPay can be used across 390 cities in Indonesia, even in cities where Gojek has yet to expand its operations. Users across Indonesia can download the Gojek application and use the features provided on GoPay.
