Facing shifting trends, Gojek introduces new innovations to meet 2022 transportation needs

Gojek is ready to meet Indonesia’s needs for transportation in 2022. This year, the company is focusing on two aspects of sustainable innovation:  service reliability and transportation integration.

Last year, Gojek proved itself to be a consistent and reliable go-to application for the community, despite the coronavirus pandemic and the health protocols that followed, supported by innovations such as #ProteksiEkstra for all of its fleets.

It is through the company’s continuous innovation that it looks to the future, with the #UdahSaatnya (“it’s time” in Bahasa Indonesia) initiative that supports  people who feel it is time to return to activities undertaken before the pandemic, to pursue productivity, through the presence of reliable and diverse transportation services.

"The COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years has not hindered Gojek from bringing innovation to its transportation services. Additionally, Gojek is even more motivated to answer people’s needs and remain the mainstay of public transportation through continued innovation,” said Amanda Parikesit, Head of Global Transport Marketing at Gojek. “To this end, in 2022, we have prepared a variety of sustainable innovations that will further strengthen Gojek's presence as the preferred transportation solution for the community."

Gojek recognized public trends in 2021: high expectations for safety and hygiene in transportation modes, the desire for integrated urban transportation and the search for more environmentally friendly mobility options. To address these needs, the company will highlight two focuses in 2022, as mentioned previously. The first innovation is to increase their service reliability.

In September 2021, Gojek launched GoRide and GoCar Protect+ services that guarantee Protect+ drivers are 100 percent vaccinated. GoCar Protect+ is equipped with protection shields in each vehicle, as well as an air purifier from Sharp that is able to reduce airborne viruses by 91.3 percent in 30 seconds to ensure safe mobility for users. GoRide Protect+ passengers are equipped with extra protection through protection shields in each vehicle and face shield extensions on drivers’ helmets.

Compared to the first week of the Protect+ launch, the usage of this new service has increased threefold.

Therefore, in 2022 Gojek plans to expand the GoRide and GoCar Protect+ services, currently available in Greater Jakarta, Bandung and Bali, to other key cities.

Moreover, in collaboration with Prodigi and Asuransi Sinarmas Jiwa, Gojek provides additional protection benefits for passengers of up to Rp 350 million in restitution by paying an additional premium of Rp 1,000 only.

Drivers will also receive training through their application in order to improve the safety and comfort of passengers, from service excellence to the prevention of sexual harassment. The training has already been completed by hundreds of thousands of active driver-partners.

In 2022, the company will implement new standards for GoCar drivers: the use of uniforms, the mandatory display of identity cards in each vehicle and the introduction of hospitality industry service quality by proactively asking about the needs of passengers, for example, the comfort of the vehicle’s temperature.  To start, these new standards will be implemented among GoCar Protect+ drivers.

On top of those innovations, in 2022, Gojek’s customers will also get a greener mobility option as part of the company's commitment to expand its electric vehicles by aiming for 1 million kilometers of trips using electric vehicles. At the same time, Gojek transportation services will be integrated with the GoGreener Carbon Offset feature to ensure a seamless process whenever customers want to offset their carbon emissions. These efforts are part of Gojek’s company-wide goal of reaching zero emissions by 2030.

The second focus is on integration with other transportation services, which will be achieved through the recent partnership with PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia via a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The company’s GoTransit offering integrates its services with the KRL Commuter Line service, which allows users to buy KRL tickets, buy bundled travel packages using GoRide, GoCar and KRL, as well as enjoy pick-up point facilities or waiting areas that Gojek has built at several KRL stations.

Based on research, 11 KRL stations in Greater Jakarta are most often used as points of origin or destinations for Gojek transportation services. Therefore, Gojek is committed to providing the best multimodal mobility experience to the public.

“This innovation is eagerly awaited by the community. In my research on this topic, 76.12 percent of respondents stated their support for public transportation services and ride-hailing services working together. The more often a person uses public transportation, the more often that person also uses ride-hailing services. The presence of Gojek as a connector between transportation modes and functioning as a first-mile and last-mile will further facilitate community mobility," said Dr. Eng. Muhammad Zudhy Irawan, S.T., M.T., a researcher at Gadjah Mada University.

During the media discussion session, Muhammad Zudhy Irawan mentioned three other factors that were considered by passengers when using online transportation services during the pandemic. These   were passenger safety factors (covering safe driving), health protocol factors (including vaccinated drivers) and reliability factors of transportation services (including service quality). He expressed his appreciation for Gojek’s successful innovations that answered those public concerns. “This is the right step  to be able to meet the mobility needs of today's society,” said Zudhy.

“The series of innovations and initiatives that we present is a form of our responsiveness and adaptation to the dynamic needs of public transportation, especially in the midst of a pandemic. The hope is that Gojek can still be the mainstay of community mobility with the situation getting better and with people who are now starting to return to their activities," said Amanda.
