It has become a model and pioneer eco-village demonstrating waste management techniques and income-earning from waste and outdoor environmental and health education for adults and children (http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/mai/sukunan).
Undreamed of numbers (almost 20,000) of villagers, government officials, NGOs, women’s groups and academics throughout Indonesia have visited Sukunan and are attempting to emulate its example.

An upcoming “Congress on Waste Banking” (Kongres Bank Sampah) will address the types of activities practiced by Sukunan and other model villages.
The congress, organized by the Environment Ministry, will be held in Yogyakarta from Sept. 11-13.
