en's doubles pair Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan are the country's only hope in the category at the 2014 BCA Indonesia Open through, after they beat fellow countrymen Gideon Markus Fernaldi/Markis Kido at the first quarter final game on Friday.
Hendra/Ahsan beat Fernaldi/Kido 21-13, 21-23 and 21-13. The pair is scheduled to face either South Korean shuttlers Kim Ki-jung/Kim Sa-rang or Chinese Taipei team Lee Sheng Mu/Tsai Chia Hsin, who will compete on Friday afternoon.
Ahsan was glad to have reached the semi-final and that it was a difficult game, especially as they had to battle past good play from Fernaldi/Kido in the second leg, Ahsan said during a press conference,.
'They played without pressure at the second leg, which looked like trouble for us,' he said at the Istora Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta.
Hendra said he would focus on his performance rather than feeling pressured about being the only country men left.
'All contenders are good players, because world competitions are getting tighter. I hope, the situation will motivate our juniors to train harder,' he said.
The BCA Indonesia Open tournament, which is a collaborative event between Bank Central Indonesia (BCA) and the Djarum Foundation on June 17-22, invited shuttlers from 28 countries to compete for their share of the US$750,000 prize money.
Last year, Hendra/Ahsan defeated Kim Ki-jung/Kim Sa-rang at the BWF World Super Series Finals in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and won the title for the first time since the event was first held in 2008. Kim Ki-jung/Kim Sa-rang were the champions of the Malaysian Open 2013. (gda)
