aramadina University political communication observer Hendri Satrio said that President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla needed to stop displaying "drama" in front of the public as it threatened their reputations.
He made the statement in response to the delay in the announcement of Jokowi's Cabinet on Wednesday evening. He labeled it "drama" because the former Jakarta governor had decided to hold the announcement at Tanjung Priok port in North Jakarta rather than at the State Palace, where journalists had been waiting since morning.
By selecting Priok port as the site for his announcement, Jokowi reportedly wanted to demonstrate his goal of prioritizing the improvement of the maritime sector during his 5-year term.
Jokowi had allegedly instructed state-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II (Pelindo II) to prepare the stage. Though a black-carpeted stage and a sound system already been set up since 7 p.m. at Terminal 3, Jokowi suddenly postponed the announcement.
According to tempo.co, PT Pelindo II president director R.J. Lino prepared the stage two days ago with budged of between Rp 500 million [US$41,550 thousand] and Rp 700 million.
'If [this drama continues] over the next five years, the budget [that must be] allocated for it will be larger. If the Cabinet announcement is conducted at the Palace, it will be far more affordable,' Hendri said on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.
He said that a similar drama once was shown by Jokowi when he conveyed a speech aboard a traditional phinisi ship in Sunda Kelapa Port in North Jakarta after being named the winner of presidential election by the General Elections Commission (KPU) in July.
'Such a drama will become boomerang for Jokowi because it will bore people. They will understand that [actions like choosing Priok and Sunda Kelapa] have no substance,' he said.
Kalla said on Wednesday that he, along with Jokowi, would likely announce the members of their Cabinet within the next two days.
He said that he and Jokowi had had difficulties identifying persons with the requisite capacity, credibility, experience, leadership and track record to become ministers.
'Another challenge is how to balance those who come from political parties with those who come from professional [backgrounds],' he said as quoted by kompas.com.
Kalla said that he and Jokowi had taken into consideration reports prepared by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) in their selection of ministers.
As of Wednesday, Jokowi had interviewed several persons, such as Muhaimin Iskandar of the National Awakening Party (PKB), Yudi Chrisnandi of the Hanura Party, Aria Bima of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and Mirza Adityaswara of Bank Indonesia.
Jokowi has announced that out of his 34 Cabinet positions, 18 would have professional backgrounds and 16 would come from political parties in his coalition, namely the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the NasDem Party, the National Awakening Party (PKB), the United Development Party (PPP), the Hanura Party, and the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI).
