National Police chief Gen
ational Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti said on Tuesday that the police would soon file a request to extradite a group that kidnapped and held hostage two Indonesians in the jungles of Papua New Guinea (PNG).
Badrodin argued that the reason the perpetrators should be extradited to Indonesia was because the kidnapping had occurred on Indonesian soil. Furthermore, one of the perpetrators was on the National Police's wanted list for a murder allegedly conducted in 2006.
'We already have an extradition agreement with PNG so if we request [extradition] then we hope that they will give it to us,' he said, adding that the perpetrators were currently being detained by PNG authorities.
However, Badrodin acknowledged that the police force must submit the request through the Law and Human Rights Ministry.
'We will coordinate it soon with the Law and Human Rights Ministry because extradition is managed by the government, not the National Police,' he said.
Last Thursday, hostages Ladiri, alias Sudirman, and Badar were released by kidnappers in a village on Mount Victoria, PNG, after intensive communications with the PNG foreign minister and military commander.
Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi indicated that the armed group responsible for the abduction of the two men was affiliated with a network of activists that had been advocating for the resolution of human rights violations in Papua.
