T

he Batanghari Military Command is holding a street vendor, only identified as RS, for wearing a t-shirt with a hammer-and-sickle symbol, known as a symbol of the communist party.

RS was detained while selling chilis at Talang Banjar, East Jambi District, Jambi.

Batanghari Military commander Lt. Col. Hari Widodo Noercahyo said RS received the shirt from his father, identified as TS.

Both said they did know anything about the symbol.

Military and police personnel have been ramping up the monitoring of communist activities in the wake of a nationwide effort to push reconciliation efforts for the purge of alleged communist supporters in the country in 1965-1966.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has called on the security forces to refrain from excessive measures after detaining many citizens recently for wearing communist symbols and confiscating books related to communism.
