awmakers have called on the Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry to develop childcare programs for children of migrant workers who are left behind while their parents work abroad.

Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) politician Ledia Hanifa Amaliah said on Monday that the ministry should develop a community based child custodial program for the children, pointing to the design of the program to begin ahead of the 2017 fiscal year.

"The government needs to develop alternative custody care for children that is different from orphanages because these parents tend to entrust their children to their relatives or even next door neighbor," Ledia said during a hearing with Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Yohana Yembise.

NasDem Party politician Tri Murny said 58 percent of migrant workers were female, therefore the ministry should invest more in the protection of them and the children in their families. (dan)
