ewly inaugurated chief of the National Intelligent Agency (BIN) Gen. Budi Gunawan on Friday pledged to uphold human rights, democracy and the rule of law in carrying out his new job.

During the inauguration at the State Palace by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Budi also said he would perform his duties and authority during his tenure seriously, with objectivity, courage and professionalism.

"I will uphold the code of ethics of state intelligence in every place, time, and under any circumstances. I will never surrender the duties and obligations of my office, and I will [always] uphold the secrecy of state intelligence," said Budi, who replaced Sutiyoso.

Budi, who was former National Police deputy chief, passed the screening by House of Representatives Commission I overseeing security and foreign affairs, on Wednesday, where all 10 political factions had approved him as BIN chief.

The House expected Budi to fulfill his vows to improve the BIN’s performance and stepping up measures to protect the country from transnational threats, especially terrorism. (bbn)
