Additional security won't use city funds: Ahok

Due to frequent protests, the Jakarta Police are now deploying more security personnel to accompany Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama any time he attends events outside City Hall.  However, the governor has stressed that the beefed-up security would not use additional funds from the Jakarta city budget.

ue to frequent protests, the Jakarta Police are now deploying more security personnel to accompany Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama any time he attends events outside City Hall.

However, the governor has stressed that the beefed-up security would not use additional funds from the Jakarta city budget.

“I never spend any money from the city budget for security. I also don’t know why the police need to deploy additional security for me. They don’t want to take the risk,” said Ahok as reported by city-owned news portal, beritajakarta.com at City hall on Tuesday.

Ahok said he was unaware of any serious threats toward him, but he added that the intelligence institution might know better. “Every day I receive threats. But I remain relaxed,” he added.

Adj. Sr. Corm. Ida Ketut GKR, the head of the Gambir Police precinct in Central Jakarta, also said that 153 police officers had been deployed to guard City Hall on Tuesday to anticipate a planned demonstration at the governor’s office.

Last week, the governor was escorted by a number of police personnel while attending events. Dozens of bomb squad personnel were also deployed to secure the governor when he officiated a market in Central Jakarta last week.

Dozens of police officers riding motorcycles were also deployed to escort the governor when he officiated the Kebon Bawang market in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Tuesday. (bbn)
