oordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has called on state seaport operator Pelindo to team up with the private sector in a bid to reduce dwell times at the country's ports.
Luhut said port operators had to build dry ports and double cranes and improve cargo procedures to meet the dwell time target set at 2.5 days.
"If Pelindo experiences difficulties, they can invite the private sector [to join]. All operators are urged to carry out such measures immediately, because cutting dwell times is one of our efforts to reduce high transportation costs," he said at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday.
He added that the ministry had sent a team to Belawan port in North Sumatra on Saturday to check the dwell time there, which reportedly was up to 6 days.
Last month, President Joko Widodo expressed outrage over the long dwell time at the country's major ports and reiterated his expectation of expediting cargo handling by reducing the average dwell time from currently between 3.2 and 7 days to just not more than 2.5 days.
Dwell time refers to how long it takes for cargo to be discharged and receive clearance. Dwell time at the country's main sea gateway, Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta, lies between 3.2 and 3.7 days, while at East Java's Tanjung Perak it could be up to seven days. (ags)
