tate-owned Greater Jakarta commuter train operator PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek (KCJ) has no plan to increase its fares, as it booked Rp 207 billion (US$15.57 million) profit, last year, KCJ finance and administration director Ari Mulyono Madyo says.

He said that 90 percent of the profit still came from passenger fares.

The public service obligation (PSO) fund from the government was still key to financing the company’s operational costs, Ari added.

Through the PSO, the government had allocated Rp 1.3 trillion for the commuter service’s operations in 2017, which was part of the Rp 2.1 trillion PSO allocation for state-owned railway operator PT KAI, he said, adding that his company might propose additional PSO funding to maintain its current pricing of fares.

“We need additional funding. I believe the government will increase its PSO funding,” Ari said as quoted by tempo.co on Thursday.

KCJ CEO Muhammad Nurul Fadhila explained that the PSO allocation amount would depend on the number of passengers. He further said the PSO fund would be used to subsidize operational costs so that the company would not increase fares as demanded by the government.

However, Transportation Ministry railway director general Prasetyo Boeditjahjono said the government would not allocate additional PSO funding for the railway operator, saying that it just had seen a 15 percent increase from last year, based on KCJ’s projection that it was now transporting some 900,000 commuters day.
