he Jakarta administration has allocated Rp 17.2 billion (US$1.2 million) for the beautification of the Bambu Apus Cemetery in East Jakarta, as part of a pilot project to change the image of cemeteries as eerie places.
“We will build embung [artificial lake] in the middle of the cemetery and there will be a jogging track encircling the complex. The construction will be conducted this year,” said East Jakarta Forestry Agency head Romi Sidharta on Monday as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Jakarta Forestry Agency spokesperson Siti Hasni said the development was projected to be completed in two years.
“The development of this cemetery will be done gradually in two financial years,” Siti said.
The agency will build this year the embung, jogging track and concrete enclosure around the 5-hectare cemetery, under an Rp 13 billion budget this year. Furthermore, the other Rp 4.2 billion will be budgeted in 2018 to establish a management office, construct drains and roads.
There are 78 cemeteries covering a total of 796-ha in Jakarta. (wnd)
