The Bekasi regency is allocating Rp 132 billion (US$9.9 million) to repair some 80 kilometers of damaged roads in the area.
The head of the Bekasi Housing, Settlement and Land Agency’s settlement regulation division, Iman Nugraha, said that the improvement would include road hardening and paving dirt roads.
"The length of one repair point is between 100 meters and 200 meters," Iman said, as quoted by tempo.co.
He added that the improvements would be conducted in 23 subdistricts.
Bekasi regency has more than 1,000 kilometers of roads in total and the agency is identifying the agencies responsible for maintaining them.
For example, he said, national roads like Jl. Imam Bonjol or Jl. Diponegoro were managed by the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry. Meanwhile, city roads were managed by the Bekasi Public Works and Public Housing Agency.
Furthermore, Iman said that his agency handled roads in residential areas and villages. He aimed for roads in all residential areas to be in good condition by 2019.
Bekasi Regional Legislative Councils (DPRD) member Taih Minarno said that road improvement, specifically in residential areas, was often overlooked.
“The administration has to focus on improving roads in residential areas,” he said, adding that the national and regional roads were mostly in good condition. (wnd).
