Fifty houses in Klender, East Jakarta, were destroyed by fire on Thursday night.
Fire destroyed 50 houses in Klender, East Jakarta, on Thursday night.
The East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency deployed 17 fire trucks to fight the fire, which started at 7:30 p.m. It had been extinguished by 9:30 p.m. and no casualties were reported.
Agency head Gatot Sulaiman said firefighters had difficulty reaching the site, which was why it took so long to put out the flames.
"We haven't as yet determined what started the fire, but we assume it was caused by a short circuit," Gatot said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Head of the East Jakarta Public Order office Andik Sukaryanto said 10 of his officers had helped residents safe their belongings.
"So far we have not set up tents for displaced residents. If [the authorities] instruct us to do so, we will," said Andik, adding that tents would most likely be erected in the compound of the Klender subdistrict office. (dea)
