he police have arrested five out of seven suspects allegedly involved in the mob killing of a man accused of stealing in Babelan district, Bekasi, West Java.

An angry mob beat Muhammad Azahra, 30, and burned him to death after he was thought to have stolen an amplifier from a mosque.

Bekasi Police chief Sr. Comr. Asep Adi Saputra said officers had arrested AL, AR, SD, SU and NA after questioning witnesses.

“SU beat [Azahra] on his back and stomach,” Asep said.

According to witnesses, AL and AR also beat Azahra, while SD bought the gasoline and poured it over the victim before lighting him on fire.

The suspects have been charged under Article 170 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) on assault. The charge carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.
