The West Jakarta administration is investigating the cause of the black and foul-smelling water in Grogol-Kyai Tapa river.
The strong odor has bothered residents and Transjakarta passengers, as the river is located nearby the Grogol bus stop.
“We’re looking for the cause of the pollution. We’ll handle this problem soon,” West Jakarta water management head Imron Syahrin said on Friday, as quoted by tempo.co.
Imron said that his agency had worked with an environment agency to deal with the water pollution.
They took a sample of the river water and analyzed it.
The result would come out within two weeks, Imron said.
The current investigation suggested that the pollution was caused by household waste directly thrown into the river.
Imron added that the administration needed to make a communal water processing system to process the waste, he said. “Therefore, the waste that is thrown into the river could be kept within the safe threshold.” (cal)
