tate-owned toll road operator PT Jasa Marga estimated around 92,000 vehicles will pass through the Cikarang Utama tollgate, heading toward Jakarta and its satellite cities from areas in eastern Java.

Jasa Marga spokesperson Dwimawan Heru said the estimate was an 8 percent increase compared to the usual traffic at Cikarang Utama tollgate.

To anticipate the jump in volume, Jasa Marga has increased the capacity of the gates.

“We have increased the capacity of the Cikarang Utama tollgates by utilizing reversible and portable gates during peak hours, in which we will have up to 31 gates serving vehicles going to Jakarta,” Dwimawan said in a statement on Sunday.

Another attempt to reduce traffic density is the implementation of an open-close system into several rest areas at a number of points on the toll road, as well as increasing the number of lanes from three to four for vehicles heading toward Jakarta.

Dwimawan said motorists were encouraged to ensure they had sufficient gas and supplies. “In addition, motorists have to comply with [traffic] signs, ensure their car is roadworthy and have enough balance on their e-money cards before entering the toll road,” he said.

Meanwhile, Soekarno Hatta International Airport also saw an increase in passenger volume over the long weekend.

"The increase of passengers started on Friday and continued until today [Sunday], with a total increase of 9.2 percent," said Soekarno-Hatta communications manager Dewandono Prasetyo as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com on Sunday.

In Terminal 3 of the airport, Garuda Indonesia passengers had been stranded since Friday due to several delayed flights after the eruption of Mount Agung in Bali. (dis)
