oreign Ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir said on Friday that Indonesia welcomed the adoption of a new resolution on the status of Jerusalem, in which it rejected the United States’ unilateral decision to recognize the holy city as the capital of Israel on Dec.9.
Commenting on a clear majority of United Nation member states that voted for the adoption of the resolution, which was co-sponsored by Indonesia, during an emergency special session of the UN General Assembly convened in New York, the US, on Thursday local time, Arrmanatha said this showed that the Indonesian government and people “stood together with the majority of the world in supporting the struggle of Palestinian people”.
“Indonesia hopes that all UN members respect the results and heed the moral and political call of the world in demanding peace and independence for Palestine," Arrmanatha said in a statement on Friday.
The resolution was adopted with the backing of 128 countries, despite US Ambassador Nikki Haley's previous threat that “the US will be taking names” during the vote. Washington is joined by Israel and seven small states in rejecting the resolution.
Another 35 countries abstained in the vote, including the Philippines and Australia, while 21 others were absent or did not cast any vote.
This resolution affirms that the US’ decision has no legal effect and must be rescinded. It also calls upon all states to "refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions" in Jerusalem, pursuant to past resolutions. (ebf)
