he police have questioned the legal basis of the Jakarta administration’s decision to allow becak (pedicabs) to operate in the capital.
"We want the administration to take a look at the bylaw," Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.
Argo was referring to Bylaw No. 8/2007 on public order, which stipulates that individuals and organizations are prohibited from making or selling becak as well as operating or storing the vehicles.
The emission-free vehicles are deemed to exacerbate the capital’s traffic problems.
Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan recently gave his blessing to allowing the operation of becak. The administration has started gathering data and distributing special stickers to drivers in the city to legalize their operation in the capital as well as to avoid the arrival of becak from other areas.
This is not the first time the Jakarta Police have expressed opposition to an administration policy as the police traffic directorate previously demanded that the administration annul its policy of closing Jl. Jatibaru Raya in front of Tanah Abang Station in Central Jakarta, which is aimed at accommodating street vendors. (fac)
