entral Jakarta Police have arrested a man, identified as Chaery Monny Helmy, 37, who allegedly stole items at several hotels in Jakarta.

Criminal unit chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Tahan Marpaung said Chaery was arrested on Wednesday at a hotel in Central Jakarta.

Tahan said the suspect had entered the hotel’s ballroom on Jan. 24, where a press conference was being held, and allegedly stole a bag belonging to a reporter named Ghina Ghaliya Quddus. The alleged thief exited the hotel and proceeded to search for an ATM to withdraw money from the reporter’s debit card.

“There was an application form containing the woman’s personal data, including her date of birth. Chaery allegedly entered several combinations at the ATM using the woman’s date of birth to gain access to her money,” Tahan said, as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday.

He added that Chaery failed a couple of times before succeeding and allegedly took Rp 7 million (US$490) from the woman’s account. He then pretended to have found the bag at the ATM center and gave it to the nearest security guard.

Tahan said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday when he allegedly tried to repeat the crime at the same hotel.

The hotel’s management also suspected Chaery of allegedly committing the crime and took his picture. Security guards identified him when he entered the hotel and immediately called the police.

The perpetrator was detained without resisting. (nmn)
