T

he Central Jakarta Police’s women corps (Polwan) will have the additional task of monitoring students spending time at shopping malls during and after school to prevent crimes against children.

The program, dubbed Polwan Sahabat Remaja (Policewomen Are a Friend to Teenagers) also aims at encouraging students to go straight home after school.

Insp. Rasilin Nur Afriani from the Central Jakarta Police’s narcotics unit said the first operation would be conducted at Gajah Mada Mall in Gambir.

“We found that students like to hang out there after school instead of going home. They say that they only want to hang out, but don’t tell their parents about their plans. We tell them to be careful and not to trust strangers,” Rasilin said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Wednesday.

She added that criminals lure children by giving them presents or food and beverages that may contain drugs.

The police are also urging parents to monitor their children.

“We encourage students to go back to their homes first, and not hang out in malls or crowded places. Most of [these students] are underage and need to be accompanied by parents,” Rasilin said. (wnd)
