View all search resultsest Jakarta had become the country's center of drug trafficking, with three abusers arrested per day this year, the local police have said.
In the first two months of 2018, the police had arrested 235 suspects in 226 drug cases, said West Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Hengki Haryadi.
“On average, we arrest at least three suspects a day,” he said on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com, adding that police investigators were trying to obtain more in-depth information to eradicate the drug trade in the area.
West Jakarta Mayor Anas Efendi said the municipality's high population density and prevalence of nightclubs were two key causes of the thriving drug trade.
“The drugs are delivered to West Jakarta by road from various places and also through seaports from North Jakarta,” Anas said.
“A lot of people have inadequate knowledge [about the danger of drugs],” he added. (vla)
