akarta Military Command (Kodam) Jaya is set to evict the occupants of 30 houses in a residential complex in Tanah Kusir, South Jakarta, despite an unruly protest by the occupants on Wednesday morning.

Kodam Jaya logistics assistant Col. Tri Hascaryo said the houses were owned by the military.

Neither military personnel nor former personnel lived in the houses, he said.

Some of the houses were occupied by children of former personnel while others were rented to other parties, and the military intended to take possession of the houses once again, Tri said.

“There are 326 houses here and we will empty out 30 houses. Today, we will empty out 10 houses first,” Tri said Wednesday according to kompas.com.

Tri added that he hoped occupants who had received notices to vacate would leave the houses as soon as possible.

The military has prepared rented houses in various areas in Jakarta for the evictees and pledged to pay the rent for the first month.

Tri said military personnel would also accompany those who wanted to move to a rented house or another place by truck.

On Wednesday morning, dozens of residents burned tires on Jl. Arteri Pondok Indah, South Jakarta, to protest the planned eviction, causing a traffic jam in the vicinity.

Traffic returned to normal about 9 a.m.

The residents deem the eviction unjust because the case is still being processed by the court.

On March 13, the residents filed an appeal to contest the East Jakarta District Court’s ruling that rejected their lawsuit against the military over land ownership.

The legal process is ongoing, but the military is evicting them, the residents have said. (cal)
