ebon Jeruk Police in West Jakarta have arrested four unofficial traffic attendants, known locally as Pak Ogah, for allegedly charging illegal fees at the Permata Hijau intersection in West Jakarta.
“We arrested the suspects believed to be involved in criminality. They upset local residents because they threatened any passing motorists if they did not give them money,” Kebon Jeruk Police chief Comr. Marbun said on Tuesday as reported by kompas.com.
The suspects come from Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, and Kebon Jeruk.
Marbun said the suspects were arrested during a police operation from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday. Previously, the residents had reported the Pak Ogah to the police, he added.
The term Pak Ogah refers to a character in the popular 1990s puppet show Si Unyil, in which Pak Ogah was an unemployed person who asked for small change from the people he met.
“We detained them and after we surveyed their data we brought them to Kedoya Social Shelter for rehabilitation,” he said.
Previously, the police arrested up to eight people who had been allegedly collecting illegal parking fees from drivers in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, for about one year. (ami)
