The Navy has detected a 20-meter-long object suspected to be part of Lion Air flight JT610, which crashed into the Java Sea on Monday morning, a search officer said Wednesday.

The object, located at a depth of 32 m in the waters northeast of Jakarta, was detected by the Navy's multipurpose research vessel, KRI Rigel 933, on Wednesday.

"We cannot yet confirm whether or not it is part of the plane," said Col. Haris Djoko Nugroho, operations director of the Indonesian Hydrology and Oceanography Center, " A sonar scanner will be deployed underwater to capture an image of the object."

A team of divers will check the finding, Haris said, adding that sonar identification might take five hours.

KRI Rigel 933 is among a number of vessels equipped with multibeam echo sonar, which would help locate debris under the sea. (afr)
