ndreas, 73, and his wife Ester, 79, died in a fire that gutted their shophouse on Jl. Ciledug Raya in the Cipulir subdistrict of South Jakarta on Wednesday.

The couple died in their bedroom located on the second floor of the property, said Suparman, an official with the South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Office.

“They were found dead in their room,” he said as reported by kompas.com on Wednesday.

The fire is believed to have been sparked by a short circuit. Suparman said the office suspected the couple were trying to escape when the fire broke but died after being trapped and inhaling smoke from the fire that blanketed the shophouse.

No other people had been in the house at the time of the fire, and the victims’ bodies had been taken by their families to a hospital, he added.
