A contemporary German music ensemble called the MAM.manufaktur für aktuelle musik (The manufacturer of real music) will perform at the Goethe-Institut Jakarta on Feb. 12 at 8 p.m., delighting audiences with its combination of contemporary music with a video and lighting installation. During the upcoming show, these separate elements will interact closely with each other.
During the show, the ensemble will play behind a semi-transparent screen while the video will present scenes centering on a mysterious figure called Pierrot. The show is called Pierrot Lumière (Pierrot Illuminated), to emphasize the importance of lighting arrangements for the show.
The ensemble comprises Gregor Schulenburg (flute), Richard Haynes (clarinet), Alexander Hadjiev (fagot), Paul Hübner (trumpet), Johannes Haase (violin/viola), Bernhard Rath (cello), Daniel Lorenzo (piano), Julia Spies (soprano), Susanne Blumenthal (conductor) and Andreas Huck (video director).
“People who might not directly engage with the abstract sound when only hearing it suddenly connect to a different level of experiencing and understanding of the music [through the visual presentations],” says Anna Maria Strauß, head of Cultural Programs at Goethe-Institut Indonesien.
Goethe-Institut presents MAM.manufaktur für aktuelle musik in the series Anders Hören, which highlights and explores contemporary ways of presenting and promoting classical music. The Jakarta performance is the first concert of the young ensemble’s tour through Southeast Asia.
