Island focus: Hospital ready to help election losers

T

he Lampung Psychiatric Hospital in Kurungannyawa village, Pesawaran regency, Lampung, has said it is ready to offer psychological counseling to legislative candidates who fail to secure a position in the April election.

Past elections have seen losing candidates suffer mental breakdowns, largely because their loss meant they would not be able to get back the exorbitant amount of money they had spent on their campaigns.

“The mental institute is prepared to accommodate those who failed to make it to the legislature and become depressed,” Lampung Psychiatric Hospital spokesman David said on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

He added that the candidates would receive the same treatment as the facility’s other patients. “There would be no special service; there would be no special room for them. If we treated them differently, there would be jealousy among other patients,” he said.

Kurungannyawa village is well known for its mental health institute.

David said the facility was aware of the social stigma surrounding mental illnesses and the treatment centers that cater to them, but he urged people who are concerned about their mental health to seek help whenever they need to.
