Economy in brief: New airport in Pangkalpinang launched

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inaugurated on Thursday the Depati Amir Airport in Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung province.

Jokowi said economic growth and the arrival of more tourists to the province should be anticipated by the construction of supporting infrastructure.

“Even more, there’s the Tanjung Kalayang special economic area [KEK Tanjung Kalayang] and we plan to establish another KEK. Therefore, the [province] should anticipate a rise in travelers,” Jokowi said in his speech for the launch.

Jokowi was accompanied by First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo, Coordinating Economic Minister Darmin Nasution, Public Works and Housing Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, Social Minister Agus Gumiwang, state-owned airport operator head PT AP II Muhammad Awaluddin and Bangka Belitung Governor Erzaldi Rosman Djohan.

The Depati Amir Airport has a capacity of 1.5 million passengers annually, but last year, it had to accommodate 2 million passengers.

“The development of a southern terminal is expected to be completed in 2020 so that the airport could accommodate 3 million passengers annually. I have even instructed the development of a northern terminal to increase capacity to 5 million annually,” Jokowi said.

Awaluddin said the new terminal had already been serving passengers since 2017 with high service standards.
