em>Swedish-Swiss multinational technology firm ABB has dedicated a seven-year partnership with electric-driven cars championship Formula E since 2018 to building up the company’s position in electric mobility (e-mobility), which includes vehicle electrification and digital technologies. ABB's president of region Asia, Middle East, and Africa (AMEA), Chunyuan Gu, recently sat down with The Nation from Thailand, Kumparan from Indonesia and The Jakarta Post's Sausan Atika to share his opinions on how the 130-year-old technology company sees the future of mobility, as well as his take on how Indonesia could adopt electric mobility.
Question: ABB has been emphasizing electric mobility. Why is it so important for countries to adopt the concept?
Answer: Many have been asking why we have to pursue electric mobility (e-mobility). Each country has different reasons. The first one is because they want to change their energy structure. Many countries, but Indonesia does not have this problem, lack of fossil fuel resources and long-depended on imported oil. They see e-mobility as an opportunity to change their energy structure, not from coal but renewables.
Second, combustion engines have been developed, but it is still a combustion engine. Megacities would like to see reduced pollution. It is an environmental issue.
Asia has a lot of megacities, with traffic jams having become more or less part of our daily lives. This has dramatically reduced the efficiency of cities. Our mobility will also improve the efficiency of entire cities and our own lives.
