The mayor of Surabaya has said that mental health patients were sent from outside of Surabaya after being disowned by their families.
urabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini aka Risma has said the number of people with mental health issues admitted to the Social Shelter Environment (Liponsos), a mental health institution in Surabaya, tends to increase in the lead up to Idul Fitri every year.
Risma said mental health patients were sent from outside of Surabaya.
“There are people with mental health issues who are sent [to Surabaya] every day. Not many people know this but I know,” she said as quoted by kompas.com on Friday.
Risma said the admittance rate increased both before and after the Idul Fitri holiday.
“Usually it will increase after Idul Fitri. Sometimes two to three people [are admitted] a day,” she said.
Risma added that the Surabaya Social Agency always checked the civil registration documents of those sent to the clinic, because in many cases the patients were disowned by their families.
