he first training session of the Manchester City Football School at British School Jakarta (MCFS at BSJ), led by head coach Chris McCarthy, was held on Nov. 16-17 during his visit to BSJ. This visit was part of the soccer school’s preparation to open its doors to the public early next year.

“We are very pleased to welcome Chris McCarthy to our school and the soccer-loving country of Indonesia. With over 12 years of coaching experience with Manchester City, he will bring a world-class soccer coaching experience to our students and the greater public,” said David Butcher, BSJ principal.

The partnership between BSJ and Manchester City was announced in July.

During his visit, McCarthy facilitated two training sessions for students enrolled in BSJ’s elementary and secondary schools. According to Keanu, a participant, students got to play a short game with the coach during the session.

“The session was really fun. Playing with the coach was really entertaining, especially with the skills training. I really enjoyed the session,” said Justin, a student at BSJ.

Another student, Thalia, said: “It was very challenging and at the same time very rewarding. I’m glad I got to be part of this training session.”

In the first phase of the partnership, BSJ will implement the City Play Model, a state-of-the-art educational soccer program devised by the coaching team at Manchester City. This program will be integrated into the school’s curriculum for its Physical and Health Education (PHE) classes starting next year.

BSJ’s coaches will also receive special training to apply the Manchester City Play Model through this partnership. Butcher revealed that the school would open MCFS at BSJ to the public for both boys and girls to learn their skills through the City Play Model in March 2022.

The first batch of student recruitment will commence at the end of January 2022, government COVID-19 rules permitting.
