LG asks young generation to care about food waste and insecurity

T

o help Indonesia cope with the critical issue of food waste and insecurity, PT LG Electronics Indonesia (LG), in collaboration with NGO FoodCycle Indonesia, is promoting a culture of sustainable food for the youth through its campaign Better Life for All.

The awareness-raising campaign promotes simple actions such as using irregularly shaped fruits by converting them into delicious and nutritious dishes.

LG hope the campaign will foster a sense of responsibility among individuals while, at the same time, driving a positive impact by reducing waste and bolstering a sustainable future.

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Food Waste Index Report 2021 has shown that Indonesia ranked second globally and top in Southeast Asia in terms of food waste, with 20.93 tonnes of food waste produced annually.

According to the Global Hunger Index 2023 released jointly by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe, Indonesia ranked 77th of 125 countries in terms of facing the risk of hunger.

The vast amounts of food waste poses a threat to the environment as the unprocessed waste produces methane gas, which can contaminate the environment and cause health disruptions.

“Food waste also contributed to total global green gas house emissions. Aware of this, LG is committed to the issue of food waste and insecurity, crucial concerns in daily life,” said PT LG Electronics Indonesia president Lee Tae-Jin.

“By collaborating with the Indonesian government and the public at large, LG is taking an active part in driving smart and better collaboration to cope with the crucial issues in a sustainable manner.”

As a multinational major appliance and consumer electronics corporation, LG has been playing a role in minimizing disposed food through innovations, manifested in its refrigerators. The LG InstaView Door-in-Door comes complete with a key component that reduces the amount of disposed food, by keeping stored foods fresh and the taste unchanged.
