SKK Migas has green-lit Phase 1 of the Rantaubais steamflood project worth US$238 million, under the helm of PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan in Riau province's Rokan Block.
he Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKK Migas) announced on Tuesday that it had approved Phase 1 of the steamflood development project in the Rantaubais Field, located in Riau province.
With a total investment value of Rp 3.7 trillion (US$238 million), the project is to be managed by PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) as the cooperation contract contractor (KKKS).
Also known as enhanced oil recovery (EOR), steamflood is a thermal recovery method that works by injecting steam into a reservoir to reduce the viscosity of crude oil, making it easier to extract.
“The approval of this POD [plan of development] is important, given that Rantaubais in Riau province is [only] the second oil field in Indonesia to implement EOR on a commercial scale using steam injection technology, almost three decades after the Duri Field in 1995,” Benny Lubiantara, deputy of working area exploration, development and management at SKK Migas, said on Tuesday, as quoted by Antara.
The Duri steamflood project was inaugurated on March 3, 1990 by president Soeharto.
The Rantaubais Field is located in Tanah Putih district of Rokan Hilir regency, while the Duri Field is located in Mandau district of neighboring Bengkalis regency. The two oil fields are both part of the Rokan Block, which was transferred from PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia (formerly Caltex) to PHR in August 2021.
Benny said SKK Migas’ approval of the Rantaubais EOR project marked a milestone for PHR as the first steamflood project under its helm.
